Hi There
What a BRILLIANT game !!!
This APP is realistic , fun ,challenging and just generally awesome !
I agree with many of these guys ,who would like to see aircraft flying from A to B , it would also be cool if ther was a setting to the amount of aircraft visable on the screen .

I was just wondering…… How awesome would it be if there was ground control as a different app ?

Cool cool. Fun fun. But it seems that attempting to land planes simultaneously on the parallels at KIAH results in loss of separation. Should this happen?

Hi,
nice game, thanks!

some features i could think of, which would make it even better:
- wind based selection of runways
- configurable frequency: planes per minute
- add waypoints in scenery
- traffic from lists/more realisic traffic
- save status, continue scenery
- zooming
- distance measuring
- speed more realistic, reduce speed in final approach
- more realisic departure controll of dest FL
Editor:
- couldn’t continue testing after seperation trouble -> restart?
- resubmit corrections
- final approaches from both sides of runway? -> see also “wind based…” above

so much fun to play already with a lot of potential, so far the nicest ATC i saw in app store, with some additional features it will rock :-)

Thanks again
Gulpi

The aircraft phraseology needs to be changed to grouping numbers for the air carriers (ie…DAL135 is spoken as Delta one thirty five). all air carriers are spoken in group form, and civilian aircraft are spoken in single digits. Also 9 (nine) is spoken as NINER. I am try to promote this to the FAA for practice, but these things limit this process due to phraseology.

Separation beetween or among several traffics on RVS is 1000ft, or we use vertical separation longitudinal. So.. When we pass close toan airçraft for ex 9000 and 8000 theses aircraft are separeted….buuuut this game consider that these aircraft lost separation…its or true!

The HD version has a playability problem in that the on screen balloons containing 3 lines of aircraft information use too much space.

Better to display just call sign and altitude, as in the original version, and make additional information available only when an aircraft is selected.

Mike K February 8, 2013 at 4:19 am

I like the green color option in the HD version. I don’t find it useful because of the harsh contrast with the bright gray coloration of the control button area.

Much better to make the whole screen green, as was the case in original version.

Hi,

Love the game. I think that it is one of the best ATC games out there. One problem I have.

I keep getting seperation issues all the time by planes who takeoff while at the same time a plane is landing. This is not realistic. There are two ways to solve this. One, give the player the takeoff call. This way players can micromanage their own takeoffs. Or implement a rule that when a plane is on final approach no takeoffs are done. This I think is harder to implement. This error does occur on any given runway, meaning the takeoff and landing can be on a different runway.

I am playing the IPad version of the game. Not the HD one.

I really love the voice implementation. It adds so much value to the game. Getting this version was a no brainer. Things that could improve still however is

- SID/STAR
- Handovers to the next sector “xxx contact center on xxx.xx”.
- Range rings
- More realistic FIX locations. In real life of course they are not all on a rectangle line around the airport. In other words it would be nice with the real world airspace layout surrounding the airport.
- Traffic based on aiport (it takes from the experience seeing a KLM landing in San Diego)

Other than this I am very happy with the voice edition.

Hello,

Recently I bought the new iPad 4. Yesterday (15-01-13) I read about this game with voice controle. Many many years ago I played the MS-DOS game TRACON III and I loved it. So I decided to buy this new iPad game.
The problem is that I don’t come any further than calibrating my voice. But after saying some commands the software freezes. This happens everytime after restarting the game. It is also not possible to play the game.
I hope you solve this problem soon in an newer version.

So far it is not possible to play this game for me.

Good luck

Pieter

Hello Pieter,

I’m sorry that the voice edition is not working well for you. Here are a few tips to help you, until we can improve the game:

– you have to stick to the very phraseology required by the game (which is only a small subset of the standards)

– you can learn it via the “Practice” room (accessible via the “Practice” button on the main menu), which can tell you if what you say is recognized, but also say a clearance for you

– all recognized clearances are listed in the instructions (“instructions” button on the main menu)

Regarding the freezes, could you tell me which iPad and which iOS versions you use?

Now you have to say the number nine instead of niner, which we use in aviation. Can you change this?

Reply

Vincent January 16, 2013 at 7:50 am

That’s a good point. As the speech recognition is based on a dictionary of “real” words, I’m not sure how niner would be recognized. We’ll try that and possibly integrate that in the next version.

Hello

A bientot

Bonjour Emmanuel,

Cordialement,
Vincent

I’ve read most of the issues above but in real ATC you don’t get a ‘thing’ on a separation issue if the issue is a altitude separation alert. It seems that you bust people if they separation is less than 3-4 miles but it’s rather a proven fact that 2 planes cannot collide if they are at different altitudes.

By FAA regs vertical separation under IFR rules for either IFR or VFR aircraft (while or while not under flight following) is 1000 foot vertical. If 2 planes are going to come between 1000 feet of each other vertical unless intrail on an approach then the controller must issue a climb or decent instruction to one or the other so that withing the cone of horizontal separation they are not at the same altitude. Hard to make a noise if you are 1000 feet part.

Even visual flight rules specify IFR flight even flight altitudes westbound and odd flight altitudes eastbound (East is least, West is best). For VFR is the same except that a FL10 would be fl 10.5. So even VFR aircraft are guaranteed to be separated by 1000 feet unless in a climb or decent.
I’ve been busted my AppControl when I allow an overflight of an aircraft that is more than 2000 feet above another one on approach and it gives me a separation error and terminates. I’m flying that plane over him because I’ll give him a teardrop approach later on with decent instructions to intercept the IAF.

So, can you fix the separation hit subroutine to take into account vertical separation and only give an error if under 1000 feet over of vertical separation within your 3-4 mile circle?

THANKS

Reply

admin January 12, 2013 at 4:52 pm

Agreed. But this is actually already implemented. The game required 3NM laterally or 1000 feet vertically. The conflict warning line appears below 5NM laterally and 1500 feet vertically, but this is a warning, not the end of the game.

Can you please specify which version you are playing (iPhone, iPad, HD for iPad, Voice Edition, Mac OS, Web) ?

Vincent.
P.S.: thanks for that passionate comment, btw.

If you could include fixes inside the boundary that you could clear to then to another fix, as in routing you can clear them on.

I would like to request some Canadian airports, CYYZ, CYOW, CYVR, CYUL, CYYC etc.
It would also be MUCH better is there were more airlines, specifically ones that actually fly to the airport. To get these simply visit the airports website and see what airlines are scheduled there. Adding them in should be easy.
The game is quite fun, but repetitive and needs some challenges, additional goals or settings that make it harder.
Another thing, the minimum speed of an a/c should be greyed out in the speed selection to avoid the popup message every time you forget the min speed of an aircraft.
More aircraft types would be a nice addition, and this could be linked to the new airlines, having only aircraft that the airline flys. I suggest Canadian airlines (air Canada, westjet, jazz, porter, first air, bearskin) and you could add charter jets and light aircraft. 5 letter identifiers that are read out instead if spelled would be much more realistic.
One final thing would be the incorporation of STARs, standard terminal arrivals and SIDs standard instrument departures. It’s a bit of a stretch but would make the game extremely close to real life atc.

Hi
First of all congratulations, it is a fantastic game.
As airline Captain with 32 years of expeirence, i have many friends flight controllers, and all say the same, FANTASTIC! But its missing the minimal altitude sectors and the wind effect in aircrafts vectors.
So thats my suggestion for the next upgrade.

Hi Stefano,
I loved the free version so I just bought the full version at the Apple Store (for $2.99). Love the application. Now that I have played about four games and just as I tried to change the airport for my next game the application crashed. I copied the crash report and was going to send it to you. Unfortunately it is at that point when I came across a web page of yours that tells me that I can become a Premium member by paying for the app. Specifically it says: “We’re still in beta phase, so premium membership price is reduced to $1.99 – Get it today, the price will go up soon!”. I don’t mind paying the $2.99 which I just did. However, when I tried to register as a Premium member so I can send you the crash report, I was told that “I have to pay to get sign on credentials”. Can you please sort this out and tell me how I can register, sign in to the premium member site, and ultimately send you the crash report?
Thanks. As I said, I love the application. It is very addictive. Especially for a pilot like me :-)

I’ve just bought a full version of app control and I am having problem to land on my final approach I am using I pad would advise where I can reduce my speed for the final approach and altitude. When I am on my final approach I am just stuck with 1000 feet and cannot reduce speed for landing. Would please help.

Reply

Robert October 10, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Love the game. It’s only fault that I see is that the separation requirement, while understandable enroute and even during approach, is not necessary during landing. I’ve had a loss of separation due to planes landing on parallel runways less than 3 miles apart. This should not happen. Nor should there be a loss of separation between a plane landing and a plane taking off. The phase of flight should be considered.

Reply

George January 12, 2013 at 4:42 pm

AGREED,

Let’s say Dallas or Chicago or London. Those runways are NOT 3 miles apart and are approved for simultaneous approach and departures. I try to land to planes in Heathrow and get dinged each and every time if they are are on parallel runways. Separation limitations are clearly spelled out in the controllers manuals which are freely available. And generally inside the IAF they are totally in the hands of the controllers and pilots if they report back that they have a visual on the other plane. In our words the controller just says, Ok, keep him visual and don’t hit him!

Reply

admin January 12, 2013 at 4:55 pm

Agreed as well…

When we (or users) create airports, consideration is take to mimic the existing runway systems, but it is unfortunately not possible to have runway spacing as in real life, because this would be unusable on an iPhone screen. For example, the runway at Heathrow are exactly 3 NM apart in the game, whereas they are much closer in real life.

Your point about conflicts between aircraft on final being handled by visual separation is correct… as long as VMC conditions prevail ;-)

However, many players made such remarks already, and we like to make the game better for you. So how would it be to deactivate conflicts as soon as an aircraft crosses the initial approach fix ?

Would be nice to have 5 letter name code designators, the three letter limits useage to VOR rather than being able to use waypoints which are more common. For example at Amsterdam traffic is now entering through EHN and departing RTM where in reality entry south is via HSD and RIVER and departures south leave via WOODY or LEKKO.

nice game.
suggestions for additional functionality:
. speed restrictions: e.g. max/min speeds for landing (@ iap)
. max 30 drg interception for approach to be acepted
. emergency aircraft for immediately landing
. crossing traffic
. two airports on one screen
good luck!

Great ideas, admin, are these suggestions on the roadmap?

I play this game a lot but over time there are not much thrills in it (no goals to achive, no abilities to make it harder except speeding it up etc). With suggestions like above the game would be more dynamic, I would like to add one more thing:
Wouldn’t it be cool if you could simulate bad weather near the airport and the ATC would be able to select active runway? Maybe collect points by how much turbulence airplanes are exposed to?

This is really one of the best apps on AppStore, I hope to see more development, and yes, I am prepared to buy them as in app purchase !

Thanks,

for the time being, we focus on our upcoming new product, APP Control HD. This will be an iPad only version, based on the same principles, but with many new features, like progress strips, ILS interception, scenarios, and so on. This will be the base for further improvements.

You can see some screenshots of it on our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/APP-Control-Air-Traffic-Control-game-online-on-iPhone-iPad-and-Mac-OS/190842967606733. It should be available soon, so stay tuned.

And It would be cool if you design an on ground ATC Simulator just as a idea for the future but please for Mac :D And the Editor should be available for Mac too, soon. AND I would like it if you add a sidebar with all planed arrival and departure datas like when the plane have a planed arriving date and so on like in a terminal in an airport…

Waiting for your Update! ;)

Will we see any improvements in the Mac version regarding voice commands (speech recognition). I understand that implementing this in IOS versions of App control would be tough at this time, but how about the desktop version?

Other neat features would be
- SID/STAR
- Traffic based on location (at present we se the airport layout but that is basically all that differs with the various airports)
- More commands
- GA Traffic
- Weather

This sim has so much potential that could differentiate it from the other more common “for everyone” ATC titles.

Hi there!

Great game! What I keep stumbling on is when two aircraft cross 1000ft apart, then I descend the higher aircraft. Despite diverging tracks, the game ends if they are within 3nm. Is there any way for the game to understand diverging routes and allow this change?

Thanks,

Reply

Andrew November 8, 2012 at 10:17 pm

Hi Ben!

It’s not an issue of a game, it is a real separation standard. If both aircraft fly under IFR (instrument flight rules), they should be separated by 3 or 5 miles or by 1000ft, no matter if they are diverging or even passed each other on opposite headings.

As an ex ATCer, I can say that this game is getting better. If the game had multiple airport destinations, it would be more realistic, much like an approach control facility. A long time ago, there used to be an ATC simulator for PC’s that actually co-incided with Flight simulator. I don’t know what happened to that system. I for one, would like to see that resurected.
Over all, good app. I am not sure that pricing it at $4.99 is going to sell enough apps. At $1.99, you wold probably get an exponentially greater number of buyers.

Hi Gary,

thanks for your comments. The multi-airport feature has been requested several times already, together with SIDs / STARs and holdings. This will all be part of a new app we’re working on, but this will be an iPad only, as these features won’t fit on the iPhone’s screen.

Hi,

The game is fantastic, I have spent hours of fun on it however there are some elements that are very unrealistic.
The game cancels if there is a 1000ft separation and 3 mile lateral separation which is very unrealistic. If possible bring back the boundaries so that there is a minimum of 1000ft separation and 3 miles lateral otherwise I must separate aircraft by 2000ft all the time which can kind of become annoying when I need to start stacking them up on the final approach.

Like I said I love the game however if these were fixed then it would be more fun and more realistic.

To recreate error, just take an outbound plane, send him to waypoint at correct altitude. Tap on plane before it leaves which opens controls screen. When the airplane reaches waypoint, the app crashes.

Reply

GL July 9, 2012 at 9:54 pm

In real life controllers generally must vector aircraft to intercept the final approach course at not more than a 30 degree track angle. Assigning a runway (i.e. issuing approach clearance) once an aircraft is on a maximum 30 degree intercept angle would be a great way to simulate this – an aircraft on a greater angle would continue right through the final course without intercepting.

I am frustrated because when (if!) the “Game Over” due to failure to maintain adequate separation sign appears, it more often than not blocks out ones view of the screen right where the incident occurred and doesn’t give you the opportunity to see your mistake. Pressing ok clears the game without a chance to study the screen afterwards. It would be nice if either the”GameOver” notice was on the right hand command side, or if when you acknowledged it with”OK” it disappeared from the screen, leaving the incident visible until a new game was started. Maybe you could consider changing this?

Reply

There is no penalty for changing an aircraft’s landing runway, just build the sequence as you want. The initial runway is selected randomly.

As this question came often, I have one in turn: would it be better to not assign an initial runway to incoming aircraft, and force the player to choose one ?

You may be embarrassed to know that you can’t spell AIRCRAFT (see score line at bottom of the screen). You might want to correct this in the next version ;)

Nice app. After a while I get bored because the rate of appearance of traffic is always the same and very easy to manage. Could be better just if you increase the ammount of traffic after time passes.

Bruce Kaufmann May 2, 2012 at 1:52 am

1. When game ends due to a conflict, you show the conflict ids but the dialog box covers the area of the conflict so I am not able to view what happened. Also, there is no scale on the grid that shows distance so the user knows visually how close planes are. Could you make the screen with distance rings? Also, it would be good if we could pinch to reduce and open two fingers to enlarge an area where things are tight and getting too close together.

2. I am a premium user and am not able to register. What am I doing wrong?

3. How about being able to mix in general aviation traffic and also traffic passing thru the air space.

Thanks,

Bruce

admin May 5, 2012 at 10:00 am

Bruce,

thanks for your kind words, we really appreciate that. Regarding your questions…

1. True, we will try to change the way the conflict is displayed when the game ends. About the distance reference, the grid in the background has a spacing of 3NM between the lines. Other gamers also requested pinch and zoom and we’re thinking about that.

2. The web and iPhone / iPad versions are independent. Buying the pay version of the app does not make you a premium user on the web.

3. Crossing and GA aircraft are also a very popular request, we will also integrate it at some point. Not sur you want a B747 coming directly after a C150, though ;-)

Thanks,
Vincent

Love the game.

One issue I am really annoyed with is in Denver when an airplane starts the approach to 26 and an airplane takes off from 35L which immediately causes a loss of separation and the game to end. This would not happen in real life, if it was VFR tower would require the departing aircraft to report landing traffic in sight before issuing a landing clearance.

Also it would also be cool to set up your own LOA’s from “center”, like altitude, heading and airspeed prior to entering your airspace…if center requires 9000′ over their fix you should be able to set your own requirements (within reason).

Love the game

Hi Kate,

on iPhone, you have to touch the selected aircraft a second time to get access to the control panel, which appears as an overlay.

Hope this helps.

Hey, enjoy the game.

Not throwing credentials around but I have a couple of things that i would like to see changed. I wish that there was more knowledge of what was coming down from center and up from tower. In regards to SIDs and STARs, some of the fixes are difficult to hit. Its adds to the challenge, but i don’t know if there is individual performance to the various planes or if its generic. As in real life there are turboprops and jets, each with different speed crossing restrictions. And with the performance is that certain planes can and others can’t climb well. This goes with descents as well. If i need a plane at an altitude asap, it would be nice if they could do it sooner. Really just some ideas. Thanks
Sean

Great game! Just a few suggestions… Add weather! Have choice of random weather or weather themes, with elements including wind (which may change causing runways to change as aircraft land into the wind), rain or snow, with storm cells you need to vector aircraft around, and possibly low ceilings / visibility which may cause aircraft to abort the landing and go around for another approach (random chance, increases based on weather at airport – could also have storms cause this, or a good storm create the need for aircraft to be held from landing until it passes etc.)

An interesting option for weather could be to use Real World conditions, just have the app read the airports METAR report and create weather based on that.

This is by far my favorite iOS game – I use it both on my iPad2 and on my iPhone4. Extremely addictive, and a good mental workout at times. Not sure if I should be proud or embarrassed (due to how time I spent playing!) to report my high score of 1,289,603, which is 304 aircrafts handled. Of course, my phone restarted which is what cost me the game at that point :) Luckily, I have a screenshot…

Anyway, I wanted to echo a few other feature suggestions:
- Crossover flights that do not takeoff or land at the airport
- Emergency landing request
- Wind impact
- Holding patterns

And if you end up building a second game, maybe you could do a Ground Control version.

Anyway, this is the best ATC game out there – keep up the good work!

Thank you for many pleasant hours. I read the preceding posts about scoring and I wonder if the scoring algorithm should be adjusted. If what I read is correct landing planes fastest is the highest priority which mean the planes should swiftly overfly the airport and then pivot down and slow down fast. I don’t recall doing this when I fly. I think order matters a lot in real life, not just speed. Keeping the separation is first priority , not making many direction and altitude changes second, speed third. Thanks again, MacLinks

Reply

admin March 3, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Thanks for your comment, MacLinks.

You make a good point. May be the next version will allow for speed reduction only for arrivals, and 250 knots for departures, which would be more realistic.

True. I love this game, it grows on me, but it has a lot of shortcomings if you really are into aviation. Maybe you should decide between positioning it as a game or as a simulation. I hope you choose for the latter. If so, then add STARs and SIDs with the fixes most near to the airport.

Could you add KMCO? I love this airport. I guess you have access to the most used STAR’s and SID’s for this airport.

Thanks.

You’re are pointing to a key point. APP Control is at a crossroads between gaming and simulation. It’s also clear that some features (i.e. holdings) will not be feasible on iPhone because of the very limited screen size.

We also try to keep everything in a single app, so may be different modes, or mode configuration options, for gamers and fans of simulation. This is as always a work in progress, so you can expect more with each version.

Hi Vincent, its me again.
As I already told you I got the problem that after months playing your great game there was no loading after pressing the app on my ipod touch. Just a white screen. I had to erase the game and install it again completely. So far so good.
Now it happened again and I choose the same way of recovery. Except the case that I had to pay again the fee of 3.99 EUR and additionally 1.59 EUR for the additional airports. This is procedure is hard to understand and definitly not your fault.
The following sequence of pressing buttons on my ipod touch reasoned the completely failure: Pressing the app to start the game and short after when (the starting sequence is running) you adjust the volume nearly at the same time. Don`t do this. This causes the break down in my system.
Greetings
Andy

Hi!
First of all: this is a great game which I tink is by far the best ATC sim on the iPad. The UI is also well done.

A suggestion for any upcoming updates, though: the airlines coming into a particular airport should be realistic as should the A/C types. There are no Easyjet 747s flying into JFK. Having not a single US flight (Cactus) in CLT doesn’t makes sense considering it’s their hub. Also, why not add Asian carriers as well.

Regarding the three mile separation rule: I’m not sure this applies to flights on parallel tracks. At EDDF for example simultaneous approaches on 25L and 25R are being done and these are only 1400 meters apart.

In any case, keep up the good work. Looking forward to future versions of the game.

As for suggestions…
I’d like to see KBOS added, maybe KPVD. As many others have suggested, holding fixes, routes, transitioning traffic, general aviation, emergencies are all good ideas.

We should be able to choose which runway they land on. When Jetblue is coming into LaGuardia they don’t say “New york approach, jetblue 916 inbound for runway __” They contact approach, and the controller tells them which runway they are going to land on.

Otherwise, its a really great game so far. I have flight control, ATC pro, all the big ones in the app store and this is the best, most realistic one so far.

Hi John,

this would be feasible, we also think of pilots reading back incorrectly. But there could be a problem with the time it would take, particularly is you play at 5x or 10x speed (not to mention the 20x that Sten requested, see comment below).

- Stockholm Arlanda airport would be a nice addon beeing my home airport and the largest in Sweden
- Holding points as well as SID and STAR approaches/departures
- Traffic based on location not random.
- Speech commands, I noticed that one of you competitors addad this awesome feature to their iPad ATC game so it should not be impossibe and would add so much realism rather than touch the screen.

Hi guys
I’m ATCo in Spain, and after giving my congrat’s for this amazing game, I’ll like to share my knowledge about Madrid Barajas operations. There are only two ways to use the RWYs in Madrid: With southern winds, the planes land in both 18 L&R and depart from both 15 L&R; with Northern winds, it is made in the opposite RWYs: 33 L&R for landing traffic while the departures are using both 36 L&R RWYs. I know that your way to present the traffic pattern in the game is also quite logical, but I suggest you to change the actual patterns for a more realistic behavior. Also, including LEBL (Barcelona) and LEPA ( Palma de Mallorca) patterns should be a great idea.
Thanks a lot

Reply

admin January 29, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Hi Gonzalo,

thanks for your feedback, it’s always very appreciated. The way Madrid Barajas was modelled was also to make it more of a challenge. The way you guys work naturally reduces the number of potential conflict, which is great for real life, but not for a game… However, we’ll consider modifying it in an upcoming version.

Hi there,

your departing aircraft shall reach its exit point (the one it’s linked to when you select the aircraft) at the assigned altitude (the one with a light green background). An aircraft must be within 0.25 NM from the exit point to be considered “coordinated”. The best way is to use the “DIRECT” button to make your aircraft fly directly to its exit point… assuming this would not lead to a conflict ;)

Hope this helps,
Vincent

Martin January 22, 2012 at 9:14 pm

Hi there,

i am a professional pilot on the A320 and i absolutely love your game. <i have been playing it for hours. However, i do have a few suggestions to make:

1. All arriving jet aircraft that appear on the screen should have a speed of 250 kts, because that is what we normally have when we descend through 10000 (except for the props, which would have around 220kts). It is absolutely unrealistic to have to accelerate an aircraft once it arrives in the terminal area – which I now always have to do, once the plane arrives on the screen.

2. All arriving aircraft should have a speed limit at the descend point or FAF of around 200-210 kts. Maybe you can program this as a prerequisite to start the approach – 1. be at the correct altitude and 2. be at the correct speed.

3. I would also love to see overflying traffic.

4. For the scale: If you say every square equals 3 NM then your final Approach is just too short – should be 9 to 10 miles.

5. I know it is complex and maybe a bit for the longterm, but: we need wind. You should add a wind vector in the top left corner. The speed in the aircraft data field should be ground speed (indicated speed corrected for wind influence) and the speed you command is indicated speed.

6. Just a personal wish: You could ad Cologne Bonn EDDK CGN, which is one of the busiest cargo airports in Europe with a nice layout of 3 crossing runways.

Keep up the good work,

martin

Hi,

Keywords: fun & addictive.

A suggestion: if you acknowledge the end of a game after an LOS-message, the last “image” of the game is immediately cleared, which prevents analyzing what went wrong. If you would make that a two-step procedure (1. acknowledge LOS-message 2. clear screen and restart a game), that would be great.

Keep up the good work.

The minimal separation required in the game is 1000ft and 3NM, but the STCA line appears when the separation gets below 15o00ft and 5NM, to act as a warning.

A few suggestions:

1. Option to play more than 25 flights (maybe options for 50, 75, 100, and user fill-in amount)
2. Flight density (number of flights) profiles much like exercise machines have interval training, hills, one big hill, etc. so players can pick a pattern
3. Maybe a flight density slider that can be adjusted during the game to increase/decrease challenge in real time.
4. Crossover flights that do not take off or land.
5. Beacons for runways to give destination for final descent

Thanks again for a fun game.

- I miss the pause button. Getting a drink becomes pretty difficult.
- Maybe a slider to increase / decrease traffic volume? Faster / slower is not very realistic.

Absolutely great app! Would love Brussels as one of your next airports too (I live in BE).
A few suggestions:
1. What is the use of the score if it is nowhere traceable? Scoreboard or career track to consult may be interesting.
2. Emergencies? Planes requesting priority landings and so on.
3. maybe too difficult, but since you’ve done such a great job yet, why not: link airplanetypes to specific airlines and perhaps to specific airports.
4. possibility to add traffic within a given timeframe (or depending on the actual time of the day?) or add difficulty-levels
5. mentioned before: holding points.

I have the full iPad version and i’m getting pretty much addicted. I used to play Tracon in my younger days and after so many years there finally is something that can match it!

Julie Guvernator December 18, 2011 at 4:35 am

Yes, emergency and priority landings would be really cool. If a user is really lousy at controlling traffic, the planes will run out of fuel.

I’m trying to figure out how the scoring works. I just worked Charles De Gualle Airport flawlessly and got one of the lowest scores I’ve ever had.

Very great and addictive game !!!

Few ideas for the next releases :
- Impact of weather conditions (choose the right runway depending of wind, …)
- Limiting approach speed: In real life, aircraft must slow down in a defined area around airport; it may be interesting to limit the speed around the airport. In addition, speed should be limited at the “final approach point” (make no sense to arrive at that point with speed of 250 kts)
- An option to deactivate sound in the Mac version

And a request…
Could you add Brussels (EBBR) at the airport list? It is an interesting airport with 2 parallel runways (25-07 R and L) and a transversal runway (02-20)… And that’s an airport where I really like to land ;-)

Thanks

Hi JP,

thanks for your feedback, we appreciate that. We’ll see what we can do for EBBR, and for the sound. What kind of aircraft do you fly when you land at EBBR?

Hi Vincent !

Avro RJ-100 for landing @ EBBR

I just would like to report a bug I always encounter with the App on Mac OSX 10.7.2
When I win a “25 aircrafts” game, the App always crashes after giving me the score.
Have you already encounter this bug ?

Regards

I’ll check that, does this happen when you loose separation, or after handling the 25th aircraft?

Avro in EBBR… flying for SN?

Im an air traffic controller and love the game. to make it even more challenging you can add frequency changes to the tower before the app fix and to another sector or center prior to the departure fix. for later you can also add interaction between sectors for example, appreqs etc.

This game is great fun on the iPad but there are some points you can work on ;-) .

1: planes comming in from the north always want the most southern arrival and visa versa. The same with takeoffs. Planes taking off from the southern runway need to go up north. Not very realistic but I can inmagine this is done for the gameplay. Still I would like to see it more realistic.

2: are holding points taking into account for futher updates? Every airport has them (LHR) for example when things get busy. It will be a nice addition to an ATC game.

3: it are little things that make or brake a game. So are there airplane types for sertain airliners that do not operate them in real life. Also there are a lot of airliners missing. I knew an ATC game for the PC a long time ago and they had real life flight scedules in it. Maybe something to think about.

I am now off playing your game again! Did I say already that I like it?

Hi, thanks for your feedback, we appreciate that.

At this point, the traffic and call-sign generation is purely random.

We’ve been thinking about holdings for a while, at least for the iPad and Mac versions. The iPhone screen is probably too small for that.

Morvious_NL October 22, 2011 at 1:40 pm

Hi there,

I think you are right that the iPhone screen is to small for it. One of the reasons I barely play it on the iPhone. Good luck with the development of the app! Keep up the good work.

Hi. I have just downloaded this game from iTunes app store on to my mac. This appears to be a good and addictive game, however, when I bring a plane to the runway at Heathrow 28r the aircraft overshoots the airport because its too high. There does not seem to be any way of reducing the height from 1000 feet. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Reply

admin October 12, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Hi Ian,

thanks for playing APP Control and getting in touch.

Arriving aircraft have to reach the final approach fix (the triangle in the extended runway axis) at the requested altitude, indicated by a light green background in the altitude selector.

When the aircraft is at the correct altitude and within 0.25 miles from the fix, it turns on final an descends automatically. The best way to reach the final approach fix accurately is to use the direct (DCT) buttons in the center of the heading selector.

Feel free to post more questions here if something is still not clear.

Excellent game! Only noticed one issue so far: the runway layout for JFK is incorrect. The 4/22 runways should be directly perpendicular to the 13/31 runways. They are currently set at an different angle to each other (the screenshot on your site even reflects this error).

Fabri October 7, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Well, now the game is easily ‘playable’, thanks to the new GUI for ipad. And t
hanks for other improvements.
Sometimes I feel like the speed control isn’t effective and 2 airplanes flying at different speed look covering quite the same distance in the same amount of time. Maybe a feeling?

Reply

admin October 7, 2011 at 8:46 am

The climb rates have been selected to be realistic, but some runway / exit point combinations make a direct immediately after take-off imposible, and this is on purpose. If aircraft were climbing like rockets, the game would be too easy :)

May be we can put a “easy / difficult” switch in the next version to control that and other things (see comment above about affecting a runway without giving a direct clearance).

Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

Reply

Robert October 6, 2011 at 1:40 am

I totally forgot to add this to my last comment but here it is. It would be pretty cool if the aircraft climb and descend a little quicker. Right now it takes my departures a very long time to get up to 5000 feet. 9000 feet is pretty difficult. Maybe it would be easier to implement this if the aircraft could go above 9000 feet.

Reply

admin October 7, 2011 at 8:44 am

Doh!

For the first version we had it was 30, but then we figured out 30 was better for gameplay, so we did changed that, except for the label. This will be fixed with the next version.

Love the game. Been playing the full version for a few months on ipod. Much more realistic than those other cheesy ones out there. As another poster said, I verbalize the commands. It adds a whole new dimension of challenge, but it makes you feel like a real controller! After the update , you can no longer advise planes what runway to expect independent of instructing them to immediately proceed to that FAF. I am quite disappointed with this change. Maybe a setting in the preferences could allow game play in either mode. It is my opinion that the voices are a hokey hindrance. Their only value is as a sort of model for what you should say out loud. Thanks for the cool game!

Reply

admin October 7, 2011 at 8:43 am

Thanks for your feedback Adam. The voices can be disactivated using the sound switch, but I’m sure you already figured that out ;)

I understand you point about assigning a runway to an aircraft without directing it to the final approach fix. Let us see what we can do to fix that.

From other requests, it seems that there could be a switch between a realistic and a very realistic version.

congrats for this great app. I’d like to ask you something, I have already the full version since months ago (new updates are super) direct from the appstore. So I think I’m one of those premium users you talk about, but I can’t log in here in the web. Do I have to buy it again in order to register here too?

Thanks and good job.

Hello Jesús,

thanks for your kind words, they are highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, buying the full version of the app does not make you a premium web user. If you want to play all airports and unlimited mode on the web, you’ll have to register here as well. The two platforms (iOS and web) are independent from each other, and offer the same airports.

Latest version
A few observations – I like the audio.. Adds realism to the game.
But the loss of being able to change the game speed during the game is really a poor choice. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on buying the full version, but that might be a deal breaker.

But overall a very fun game.

Reply

admin September 17, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Thanks for your feedback. Speed control has been introduced in this version. Changing the speed during the game seems to be a popular request and will be included in the next update of the iPhone / iPad version.

Reply

Kent September 17, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Thanks… I have purchased the full version anyway. I do hope the updates keep coming. I have purchased many atc games and this one has high potential. The control system is quite effective. One thing that would also ease play is some type of indicator once you have cleared a plane to it’s destination. A few more navaids in the area to use as navigation points would also be useful (even if they are purely static in their game use).

I actually enjoy this much more than some other similar apps I’ve played with. Very nice job.

One minor thing – I noticed in the iPhone version in at least one airport, and in a few screenshots, there is a way to assign a different runway. I thought maybe it was a premium feature, but so far in the web version I can’t figure out how to change an aircraft’s runway assignment. Am I missing something?

Reply

admin September 17, 2011 at 3:11 pm

No, you’re not missing anything. The runway change feature is not part of the web version at this time. It will be included in e next update, as simulwtion speed control.

Reply

admin September 2, 2011 at 11:44 am

Dan, each aircraft is worth 100 points when it first appears on the screen. The it looses one point at each position update. The remaining points – if any – are added to the score when the aircraft reaches its destination. It appears that starting with 100 is often not sufficient and that aircraft reach their destination without any point left.

This will be corrected in the next version, together with the addition of cool new features like… voice ;)

Airplanes Flying from denver immediately descent to 3000 MSL. this is a problem because the airport is at about 5000 msl. These airplanes would all crash into the ground. I think the app should set airplanes taking off to a pattern altitude of 1800 AGL. so for Denver the pattern altitude should be about 6800 msl.

Hi guys, great game. I’ve been longing for a simplistic / realistic ATC game and have found it. Although there is much to improve upon here, for instance some Canadian airports such as YVR and YYZ would be great also and this would be huge; an android version ! I would love to be able to play this game using touch and I believe it is the closest we can come to the simplicity of voice communication. As previously mentioned by a different user I would love to be able to hear voice commands given to the aircraft based on what it’s asked to do and an acknowledgement from the aircrafts would be super cool. Such a feature would get me more involved with the game.

For other fellow players : I am actually verbalizing the commands and recording them (very fun to listen back to)

Love this game. My wife physically takes the iPad away sometimes because I play so long. What’s up with the scoring. When I started playing my scores were considerably higher than lately. In both modes. I am now controlling 100+ planes but only scoring in the thousands. When I first downloaded it I would score in the tens of thousands with fewer flights controlled. It’s impossible for me to break my high scores now because it’s like a whole new scoring system took over. What’s up? Is there a way to reset at least?

I like the APP Control. It is close to reality, simple, and fun.

Here is one suggestion to make it even better.

When you “double-tap” a plane that is not selected, the first tap selects the plane,
and the second tap brings up a control panel. Fine.
But when you “double-tap” a plane that has already been selected (with a rectangular box next to it),
the first tap brings up the control panel, and the second tap often changes the
flight direction or altitude… very dangerous.

Thus, I hope a double-tap on selected planes is treated as a “single-tap”
to simply bring up the control panel.

Hello Stefan,

thanks for playing and for taking the time to give us feedback. The problem you mention about the scoring system is known. The scoring principle is simple: each aircraft has a certain number of points when it appears on the screen and looses some at each update. The remaining points when the exit intersection or runway is reached are added to the score.

But it seems that the initial number of points is too low, so many aircraft reach their destination with zero remaining points. This will be modified in the next update.

stefan July 14, 2011 at 6:22 pm

idea is great and it is a lot fun to play :-)
unfortunately I’m having problems running APP Control on iPhone iOS 4.3.3. – the score usually doesn’t count correctly – either it starts counting during the game but stops suddenly counting or it just stays zero from the beginning on, no matter how many planes successfully landed

is this a known issue ?
i had the lite version previously installed (there everything worked well)

thanks

Hello
First of all congratulations! It’s a very nice game and the most realisric one compared to others games in the atore. I’ve been playing the game for a week and now i’m going to buy the full version.

A couple of comments:

- would be nice to set up the game speed so for a newbie would be more easy to control the games
- would be nice to control also the traffic area, meaning some flights just cross the airspace going from A to B rather than land or take off
- would ve nice to have FCO airport (Rome airport) to get more Italian players (like me)

Thanks
Stefano
